18-27 July 2012
Amidst the physical scarcity that characterises the Singapore city-state, the long-awaited resolution of a political and historical incongruity is giving rise to RARE urban conditions that call for new development strategies. For decades a foreign-owned rail track has been passing, untouched, through the peninsula’s dense setting, creating along the way a unique strip that is no-man’s land but also landscape and vegetation. This strip uniquely displays the dilation of an architectural scale over the size of a city, thus requiring the simultaneous approach of the local and the large. The workshop will embark on a journey dwelling on both singularities: the planning of the linear strip and its alien status.

AAaw Penang, Malaysia
Streetware - 14–22 July 2012
George Town – the ‘Pearl of the Orient’ and capital of Malaysia’s ‘heaven island’, Penang – will be the setting for the first AA Alumni Workshop (AAaw).
The workshop will take up the challenge of rethinking the obvious – the street – within the protected and well-preserved core of Penang, which has recently acquired UNESCO World Heritage status. A novel design approach using a sequential perception of cultural layers to inform specific interventions on the forgotten voids in the city centre will aim to highlight the possible and to illustrate the unseen. We will work to develop sustainable and sensitive responses that act in concert with the place, taking into account the tropical climate and Penang’s intrinsically multicultural society while questioning materiality and performance.

Educational Workshops
We regularly organise workshops focusing on new and collaborative modes of design using advanced tools of conception and production. Let us know if you are interested in hosting, teaching or participating in one of them.
AA Singapore Workshop
Fragile - 20–29 July 2011
Within the contrived urban setting of Singapore the AA visiting workshop, in its sixth year running, will investigate surplus as a shift in design strategy. Linking multiple scales, from the individual to the supply chain, and looking at how the excessive availability of goods has transformed needs into excess, we will generate new forms and uses emerging from ordinary mass-production. Looking at the reversed engineering of everyday life will ultimately reveal this link with the global as a web of relations contained in our hand.

AA Visiting School 2010
Designed Geographies
Wednesday 21 to Friday 30 July 2010
For the fifth year running the Architectural Association will offer an intensive introduction to the school’s approach to architectural education and design. The workshop will investigate instrumental forms of urban density and develop alternative ways of observing and reading the city to generate strategic frameworks for its evolution. As the starting point for a broader reflection on prospective tools for dense urban fields, this year’s focus will be on artificial expansions of specific urban conditions and their new geographies. The design potential of operational growth will be investigated as means to adapt to multiple, fast-changing urban inputs.

Research based design
SP + URA - July 26th 2008
As part of the Vertical strategies agenda, N. Rozencwajg and M. da Costa Gonçalves present the lecture "a Journey through research based design" an event co-hosted by the Urban Redevelopment Authority.
Associated modelling
The office is exploring the pratical use of a fully integrated digital modelling for the large-scale London project. The associative model accompanies the development and coordination of the project as well as offering a constant validation of design and related execution issues, hence enhancing the overall conception.
